This is one of those hotels that I don’t understand why I’ve never visited before.
Sometimes that’s just the way it goes, but this is one lovely hotel and now I’ve visited twice in the space of three weeks.
Exclusive use is on trend at the moment and if you’re looking for a buyout (at just x 57 rooms, 26 rooms and 12 suites in the main house and 19 in the Cedar Lodge), it’s worth every penny (not as many pennies as you might think for a buyout either) and the benefits of taking over this hotel are amazing.
Use the “Get In Touch” button, contact form (scroll down) or email me your venue requirements/brief to helen@mdem.co.uk and I’ll email venue options to your inbox.
Dating back to the 17th Century, with links to the poet Percy Busshe Shelley, once owned by a former Governor of the Bank of England, now a beautifully, calm, peaceful hotel, set in 120 acres of grounds, Alexander House Hotel and Utopia Spa was awarded 5 red star status in 2012.

Dining options
So, we have the 1608 Champagne Bar, named after a boundary stone dating back to that year found in the grounds from when a Roman road ran along the western edge of the estate.
AG’s Restaurant, a charming space is open for dinner from Thursday to Sunday and also for Sunday lunch … shhhhh, it can also be a private dining option for groups wanting a change from the main meeting room for lunch too (and a meeting room)!
Reflections is the hotel’s main restaurant, a 2-rosette awarded restaurant, linking the house to the spa. Alternative options can be put in place for spa guests when taking the hotel on exclusive use so this area would be for private groups also.
I can vouch that the food is amazing!
(The spa will stay open to outside guests during exclusive use bookings but any guests using the spa will not be able to use the hotel facilities or Cedar Lodge Suite area.)
Next to the restaurant is a lounge area with comfy seating, banquettes, and a roaring fire in winter months. Where better to enjoy a relaxing drink before or after dinner. No need to rush here!
Outside you have terraces galore.

There is a terrace off the South Drawing Room, courtyard terrace within Reflections (above), terraces and lawns adjacent to two of the meeting rooms (I’ll come onto those) and a dedicated BBQ terrace within sight of the South Drawing Room too.
And the hotel are currently offering picnic packages, a wicker hamper for two, full of goodies for you to take into the hotel’s grounds.
In terms of other dining options, the South Drawing Room is just that, a lounge, but if you take the venue on an exclusive use basis it can seat a group of circa 35/40 for a private dinner, with pre-dinner drinks on the terrace in good weather.

Accommodation
We have two options here, and I wouldn’t mind either to be honest.
Usually if you’re told you’re staying in the newly, well new-ish separate accommodation annexe you’d be disappointed, but I really would be so happy to stay either in the main house or the Cedar Lodge Suites.
The Cedar Lodge Suites are a little, tiny stone’s throw from the main hotel (as you can see from the image below; access is at the far end nearest the hotels entrance). There is a small lobby area, beautifully decorated, very much in keeping with the build rather than the house which, if you’re taking even just that accommodation wing for your group, could serve as a private reception area, catering area, meet/greet area.

There are a total of 19 Cedar Rooms.
Each has:
- Mood lighting in the bathrooms.
- Wooden floors downstairs.
- Carpets upstairs.
- Nespresso coffee machines in every room.
- Each room has either a private balcony (upstairs) or a terrace (downstairs).
- The master duplex suite has a dining room and two bathrooms.
To be honest with the size of the lobby entrance to the Cedar Lodge Suites, you could even lay out a private coffee station, a buffet station or turn this into a stand-alone, small brainstorming area.
In the main house all bedrooms are obviously different in size given the age of the building, but all so beautifully decorated, all bathrooms have double sinks and I haven’t seen a small bathroom yet!
The view from any of the rooms is just lovely as you can imagine with all the space and grounds around the hotel.

Meeting space
The hotel has 7 meeting rooms in total.
The Shelley Suite is just lovely, it benefits from direct access to a lawn terrace with its own gazebo.
In Spring and Summer months you can just see either refreshment breaks, and lunch or pre-dinner drinks being privately held on the lawn terrace.
Maximum is x 60 cabaret style, and the room has its own in-built plasma and PA system.

The Wakehurst Suite has its own private terrace too, small, but very sweet and quaint, private foyer area and facilities.
If you take the Shelley (perhaps for a meeting) and the Wakehurst (as a syndicate, breakout, indoor lunch, refreshment break area), the two rooms interconnect, and that combination gives you a real dream for a private, corporate sessions, a private wing of the hotel, a bit of peace and quiet with no footfall other than those from your own group.

The Asquith (boardroom x 8/10), Chalfont (boardroom x 9), Churchill (boardroom x 14), Boardroom (boardroom x 10) are all in the main hotel, on the main corridor from reception to the rear of the hotel.
AG’s is also available for meetings, holding a maximum of x 20 boardroom style.
Given the size of the grounds you also have the space for any outdoor team activity (except motorised).

Utopia Spa
OMG! Both indoor and outdoor options!
- Hydrotherapy pool
- Bubble tub
- Swimming pool
- Saunas
- Outdoor mixed barrel sauna
- Jacuzzi
- Private hot tubs
- Male and female steam rooms
- Single and double treatment rooms (x22)
- Nail spa
- Spa boutique
- Relaxation lounge
In the changing rooms there are monsoon showers, hairdryers and GHD straighteners!

Floor plan below for reference so you can see the flow of the hotel and meeting space.

This is such a charming hotel, and you don’t have to have exclusive use to experience its full potential.
