Hotel Meeting Space Review – Donnington & Co

What’s not to like …. this good sized hotel with 111 bedrooms, well located just off the M4 near Newbury, Berkshire, 4 star hotel JUST got even more interesting!!

From the outside nothing looks different ….

But the minute you step inside something special happens.

The hotel’s reception is all muted tones, a complete transformation of the previous reception area, more earthy with links to the Post Barn (located in the grounds of the golf course that surrounds the hotel) and it gives a really warm welcome and hints at whats to come in the rest of the hotel.

The hotel’s bar, restaurant and lounge area is multi levelled. There are larger areas where groups could gather for semi-private pre dinner drinks and smaller snug areas where, on an overcast day, you could sit quiet happily all day and work in comfort.

Meeting rooms

The hotel has a total of 8 meeting rooms:

The Cromwell, the largest of the meeting spaces (images below) ..

ground floor level
just off main reception (to the right as you face reception)
natural daylight
maximum x 140 theatre style
L-shaped (lending itself to a registration/refreshment area within the room)
it’s own private bar

The Calverley ..

ground floor level
just off main reception (to the left as you face reception)
natural daylight
maximum x 60 theatre style
access to outdoor patio

Greens ..

third floor mezzanine (but it doesn’t feel it)
accessed via the lounge/bar areas
natural daylight
maximum x 60 theatre style
access to outdoor patio
octagonal
mezzanine level leading to the Greens is semi private and could lend itself to refreshment break area or even to a seated lunch

Then you have the Boardroom on the ground floor location near to the Calverley. This can hold a maximum of 10 boardroom with access to outside.

And above that on the first floor is the Earl of Seymour which can hold x 8 boardroom.

And last but not least The Castle Suites (sample images below) with joint access to a private patio area:

Accommodation

The hotel has a total of 111 bedrooms.

These are divided into “Simple”, “Spacious”, “Suites” and “Splendid Suites” bedroom types and two main colour ways.

There’s everything you need in a bedroom, some with outside access to the grounds too. My personal preference is the yellow/green rooms but I’ve never been able to settle in a bedroom that’s decorated with any red! Just me??

Leisure and Spa

I have to say that I love a Spa in the winter and it was getting dark as the site visit was coming to an end and the last thing to see was the Spa.

The pool looked so cosy and inviting with dimmed lights against the dark skies outside.

The Spa has it’s own membership base and the facilities are open to guests during their stay too with treatments at an additional cost.

There is a large indoor pool, steam room, sauna, aromatherapy room, treatment room, gym, studio and outside terraces to relax on in the summer months.

Access & Location

Train: 10 minutes from Newbury Train Station.
By car: 5 minutes off the M4.
Heathrow: 45/50 minute transfer.

Summary

Honestly the hotel is looking amazing. Better, warmer and more inviting than I was expecting even though I knew it had been through a fairly hefty, expensive transformation.

It’s always been a useful hotel because of it’s size (meeting space and accommodation) and it’s location, it’s a hotel that you really have to have on your radar.

Twin that with the Post Barn that also sits in the grounds … Accommodation and conference in the hotel then the surprise addition of the Post Barn for a gala dinner or summer corporate BBQ.
